I believe that most Egyptians will merely regard him as a the male counterpart of Aliaa El Mahdy, the girl who got nekkid for a photo shoot on her blog. But since Aliaa had some boob to show the hungry male audience, her blog went viral in a matter of a few hours.
Omar Sharif's pictures are less provocative and well, let's face it homosexuality is hands down (no pun intended) THE biggest taboo in Egypt, and perhaps all of the Arab world.
Omar is, as far as I know, the first Egyptian to ever identify himself as gay. i doubt that he will find support among Egypt's pseudo liberals, because no one in Egypt would want to be caught dead supporting homosexuality. Homophobia is identified as the accepted social norm around here, and the treatment that the 'unholy' homosexuals deserve.
What I find most astonishing is that Omar Sharif Jr. identifies himself as Egyptian. Most gay Egyptians I know that got the chance to skip town and acquire another nationality have completely denounced their Egyptian-ness--but not Omar. He even thinks he can come back to Egypt and be welcomed here one day.
Omar Sharif Jr. says that he writes this article as a "litmus test" calling for a reaction from his fellow Egyptians. He wonders if he is welcome in Egypt.

I'm not so shocked to know he's half Jew, as I know that his grandfather is of a Jewish root somehow. He is Michelle Shalhoub, as I remember.
Being gay is not so alerting of itself. But the wondrous thing is that he is seeking to return to Egypt, I mean the "New Egypt" that is very soon going to be a Salafi kind of country!!!
My advice to this young man, stay where you are, or else!!
Poor, poor idiot. Obviously, a night of good sex has went to his brain. He has NO respect for his country, or even himself. He's made a bad choice, at a bad time...
well , it's the first time for me to know that my favorite couple Omar and Faten had children .
I would welcome him and his case as a gay but only if he gave up his American Identity , he wants - and let's face it - to open the doors wide to all gays in egypt to express themselves without fear , there is a price of fear and maybe losing life he have to pay . homophobia is everywhere even in the country where he is coming from .
I don't support homosexuality but i do support and respect people's privacy and state of independence , I am against politicizing homosexuality and more supportive to socializing it .
I would welcome him if only he gave up his american nationality , if he didn't politicize homosexuality , if he turned against torturing men or women under the law because they only say they are gays , if he stood up for a right cause which is justice and equality but not only for homosexuality .
